Battery passports:
start with your documents.
A starting checklist for manufacturers, importers and integrators of industrial batteries above 2 kWh.
Before choosing a platform or generating a QR code, check which information you can support with evidence.
The date and scope
From 18 February 2027, Article 77 of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 requires a passport for industrial batteries with a capacity above 2 kWh placed on the market or put into service. Electric vehicle batteries and light means of transport batteries are also covered.
Confirm the category, finished battery and your company's role. Data fields have different applicability and timing. The Commission's materials distinguish mandatory, conditional and not-yet-required information for February 2027.
Six steps for an initial review
Identify the battery
Record manufacturer, model, revision, chemistry, capacity in kWh and application. Mark unconfirmed information as pending. Keep documents for different models separate.
Describe your role
Explain whether you manufacture, import, integrate or market the finished battery. Identify who can clarify the responsibilities and maintain the information.
Inventory available documents
List technical datasheets, the EU declaration of conformity, available reports and instructions for safety, disassembly and end of life. Record each document's version, date and covered reference.
Connect data to sources
Create a simple table: data point, value, document, page or section, and review status. Distinguish supplier declarations from reviewed evidence.
Turn gaps into specific questions
Ask, for example, which report covers this model revision. Assign an owner and a target date for the answer.
Plan the next steps
Separate document preparation from passport implementation. Decide what needs confirmation, specialist review and ongoing updates.
This is an organisational starting point, not a complete compliance checklist. A document being present does not by itself demonstrate compliance.
A small example
Data: nominal battery capacity. Source: the exact model and revision datasheet. Gap: confirm that the units and configuration refer to the finished battery. Action: request clarification before marking the value as verified.

Is a QR code enough?
The code provides access; the underlying information and the system maintaining it are also needed.
Does a document review issue the passport?
No. Product Lab provides documentation preparation and human review. Certification, testing and issuance of an operational passport are outside this service.
Do I need to send files immediately?
No. Start with a brief description. Scope and document handling are agreed before files are provided through a private link.
Need help finding your next step?
Human review of one industrial battery reference above 2 kWh: document inventory, data-to-source matrix, prioritised actions, personalised report and one round of clarifications.
